Occupational therapy (OT) helps children develop the skills needed to participate successfully in everyday activities (occupations). Pediatric OTs address the underlying physical, sensory, cognitive, emotional, and developmental skills that support participation at home, school, and in the community. For children, their “occupations” include growth, development, play, social engagement, learning, interacting with their environment, and completing activities of daily living such as feeding, dressing, bathing, grooming, and toileting. Occupational therapists work with children who may have developmental delays, illness, injury, sensory differences, or other challenges that make participation in these activities difficult.
