Hello! I’m Brenda Bliss, founder, owner, and director of Bliss Speech and Hearing Services. I am a licensed speech-language pathologist, audiologist, and a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory Verbal Therapist (AVT). Establishing the practice, growing it to provide personalized, quality therapy to thousands of patients, and training many talented speech-language pathologists throughout the past 31 years has truly been the greatest honor.
I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Disorders and received Double Master’s Degrees in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from the University of Texas at Dallas, The Callier Center for Communication Disorders. Upon graduating, I completed my Clinical Fellowship Years at the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles, serving on the cochlear implant team where I was fortunate to be trained directly under Dr. William House, who pioneered the first single channel cochlear implant device.
In 1994, I founded Bliss Speech and Hearing Services in Dallas, with the goal of providing individualized speech and language therapy services. Initially, there was a focus on working solely as a Listen and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory Verbal Therapist providing therapy services to babies and toddlers who were deaf and hard of hearing. As the practice grew with additional therapists added, we expanded our services to accommodate more patients to include those with typical hearing with speech and language disorders.
Today, our specialties include a focus on auditory-verbal therapy services, cochlear implant rehabilitation, articulation disorders, phonological processing disorders, oral motor deficits/apraxia, aural rehabilitation, voice disorders, stuttering, tongue thrust therapy, receptive and expressive language disorders, auditory processing disorders, autism spectrum disorders, introducing AAC devices, and addressing social skills development. Our team prides itself in our quality of service, accessibility, and collaboration with not only each other, but with the families of patients as well to ensure success in communication.
Throughout the years, I have spoken on behalf of MED EL Corporation and have provided workshops on cochlear implant rehabilitation locally and in Austria, Vietnam, and Thailand, sharing best industry practices along with tools to develop spoken language with parents and professionals across the world. I believe that individualized speech and language therapy plans are essential and necessary, and should be developed through careful assessment and observation along with obtaining input and involvement from the patients’ families. Our goal is to provide the tools necessary for each and every child and adult, enabling the patient to achieve their potential and become the best communicator possible.
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and friends, traveling to new places all over the world. My passions include snow skiing, playing tennis and pickleball, yoga, and enjoying the outdoors. Partnering with my husband and raising our amazing sons has been the most incredible journey. I have seen them each become successful, productive adults, and am now enjoying their spouses and our precious grandchildren!
When reflecting on the past 30+ years, my greatest joy has been to see the children I have worked with grow up and reach out to me to share their stories of success, linking them back to the hard work we all put into their auditory, speech and language development. I cherish the connections made and friendships developed with so many amazing professionals and families! I look forward to many continued years of Bliss Speech & Hearing Services as our team continues to grow and serve the needs of our communities.
